The Healthy Marin Partnership is proud to participate in collaborative efforts that
address key needs identified in the 2005 Community Needs Assessment.
- Play Fair
- Play Fair is a collaboration of youth and community organizations that, in 2004, joined resources to replace
two beer companies as sponsors of the Marin County Fair. This unique community sponsorship model made history
in 2006 when the Marin County Board of Supervisors took the remarkable step of banning all alcohol sponsorships
and advertising at the Marin County Fair. Also in 2006, Play Fair expanded its mission focused solely on alcohol-control
to “engaging communities by reducing youth overexposure to the marketing and promotion practices of the alcohol,
tobacco, and fast food industries. The Play Fair partnership is made up of a wide-variety of public and private
partners all concerned with the health and safety of young people. The partnership has grown to eleven organizations
and includes: Bay Area Community Resources, Center Point, Inc., First 5 Marin Children and Families Commission,
Healthy Marin Partnership, Huckleberry Youth Programs, Marin County Health and Human Services, Marin Community
Foundation, Marin County Office of Education, Marin County Board of Supervisors, the Marin Institute, and the
Youth Leadership Institute.
- School Law Enforcement Partnership
- The Marin County School/Law Enforcement Partnership is a collaboration representing Education, Law Enforcement,
Probation, Health and Human Services, Community-Based Agencies, the District Attorney’s Office and the PTA.
The goal of the collaboration is to encourage and support a countywide effort to keep Marin schools and communities
as safe and healthy environments for all students and families. In the past three years the Marin County School/Law
Enforcement Partnership has promoted and provided programs and activities designed to support safe and drug
free schools and communities for all Marin County students and their families.
- 2-1-1 Universal Telephone Line
- United Way of the Bay Area has received the necessary authorization to launch 2-1-1 phone service in Marin
County. The 24-hour multilingual hotline will connect people in need with health and human services, community
resources and volunteer opportunities. Expected to begin in the Fall of 2006, 2-1-1 will provide automatic social
service referrals from drug treatment programs to job trainings and will, in times of disaster, be mobile as
a public communications channel, alleviating non-emergency calls to 9-1-1. Launched in San Francisco in March
2006, United Way plans to establish services throughout the Bay Area including Napa, San Mateo, Solano, Alameda
and Contra Costa Counties.
- Healthy Teens Marin
- Healthy Teens Marin is dedicated to improving the health and safety of Marin County teenagers. This effort
includes public and private community organizations, students, parents, and educators working together toward
the goals of increasing awareness of significant health risks to adolescents, sharing information and resources,
and developing new ways of listening to and educating the youth of our country to make healthy behavior choices
as they approach adulthood. Healthy Teens Marin is a partnership of the Marin County Department of Health and
Human Services, the Marin County Office of Education, Marin County Sheriff and Probation Departments, Marin
County Public Defender's Office, Marin County District Attorney's Office and the Healthy Marin Partnership.
Healthy Teens Marin has, for 12 years, sponsored two free events for parents and teens:
- Parent University is a FREE day of workshops for parents
of teens, offering workshops on topics such as alcohol and drug use among teens, teen internet use, anger
and stress management, raising boys, gangs, navigating the teen scene, parent/teen communication, parenting
strong-willed teens and many more. All workshops are designed to help parents of teens meet today’s challenges
and will be led by experts who have extensive experience and success with teens.
- Peer Summit
provides an opportunity for middle school students to attend a FREE day of workshops on topics such as social
justice, sexual harassment awareness, drug and alcohol use and abuse, teen health, anti-bullying and respect
for all. Peer Summit attendees will have an opportunity to learn how they, as individuals and young leaders
can be informed, engaged and work to change the world with local agencies on-hand to provide information
about their services, resources and campaigns. Peer Summit is held on the Kentfield Campus of College of
Marin, and is open to all middle schools throughout Marin County.
- Marin County
Physical Activity Nutrition Wellness Collaborative
- The Marin County Physical Activity Nutrition Wellness Collaborative is working with local schools and communities
to design and plan programs to educate children and families (particularly families with limited income) how
to eat healthy and be more physically active. Funded by a grant from the California Nutrition Network – California
Department of Health Services, the campaign is being led by the County of Marin Department of Health & Human
Services, Children’s Health Services. Working with a task force of nutritionists and other public and private
agency partners dedicated to improving children’s health, the
Collaborative’s goals are to increase awareness
of the importance of good nutrition and physical activity, help reduce the risk of serious chronic disease,
and help provide resources and tools to assist communities in making a difference.
- Novato Youth Wellness Collaborative
- The Novato Youth Wellness Collaborative came together for the purpose of building a seamless system of services
among nonprofit youth service providers, Novato Unified School District, City of Novato, and the Marin Dept.
of Health and Human Services. This collaborative is an alliance of agencies and public entities formed in 2002
to provide support services to underserved youth with various needs. In October 2006 the collaborative opened
the Novato Youth Wellness Clinic, which provides no-cost reproductive, mental health and substance abuse services
to youth, aged 12-19. Other collaborative members include the Novato Youth Center, Huckleberry Youth Programs,
Planned Parenthood, Bay Area Community Resources, Youth Leadership Institute, Marin Community Foundation and
more.
- Children’s Health Initiative Coalition
- The Children’s Health Initiative began in 1995 when the leaders of Marin County hospitals, the Marin Healthcare
District Board, the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, the United Way and the North Bay Council
spearheaded the first community focused insurance enrollment and outreach effort in Marin with the introduction
of Healthy Families. This effort led to a collaborative, which has since grown to include many other organizations
including the Marin Community Clinic, Novato Human Needs, Canal Community Alliance and others and continues
to be the core of Marin’s long-standing community based outreach and enrollment effort.
In October 2003, Marin expanded beyond its outreach collaborative to develop its first policy level body dedicated
to the larger Children’s Health Initiative (CHI.) The County of Marin Board of Supervisors authorized convening
a high-level `Working Group’ to make recommendations about how to proceed with the CHI. The CHI has a long-term
goal of comprehensive coverage for all children. The CHI Coordinating Committee, is chaired by a member of the
Marin County Board of Supervisors and includes the Superintendent of Schools, and representatives of the Healthy
Marin Partnership, Marin Community Foundation, Marin County Health and Human Services, Marin Community Clinic,
the County Administrator, First 5 Marin Children and Families Commission, the Coastal Health Alliance, and the
Latino Council of Marin.
- Canal Community Gardens & Trails Collaborative
- The Canal Community Gardens & Trails Collaborative is working to establish a cohesive system of trails and
community gardens in San Rafael’s Canal neighborhood. Collaborative partners, including Canal Alliance, City
of San Rafael, Safe Routes to School, College of Marin, Trust for Public Land, National Park Service – Rivers,
Trails & Conservation Assistance, are working to increase access to healthy foods, encourage physical activity,
foster community connectivity and pride in a culturally sensitive manner, and provide an atmosphere that encourages
an environment of healthy lifestyles and community well being.
